Made in 1992 Porn-O-Rama came about in a period when
hardcore porn needed to dispel some of the myths brought
about during the 1980s when upon entering the politically
correct early to mid-nineties the media and various
anti-pornography crusaders had strategically added to their
campaign “victims” of the golden age of porn. One could
really only imagine the horrors that went on behind the
‘Green Door’, however along comes Porn-O-Rama with Ron
Jeremy and with the worlds most famous Jewish fucking
machine at the PR helm, who dares call ‘persecution of porn
talent’ without dangerously mixing feminism and religion
with anti-Semitism.
Unfortunately the pornography industry was on the back-foot,
and it wasn’t a series like Porn-O-Rama that served to
better understand the form, it was the Internet, as we all
know. That doesn’t mean you wont learn something from
Porn-O-Rama, I know I certainly did. I learnt that a lot
goes into aiding people masturbate.
Porn-O-Rama is a “squiz” behind Paul Norma’s production
methods. Paul Norman is a classic pornographer, having made
films such as “Edward Penishands”, “The Erotic Adventures of
the Three Musketeers”, and “ Super Groupie”.
The Porn-O-Rama series is a behind the scenes look at the
San Fernando Valley adult industry as presented by Ron
Jeremy and Alexis Devell. At one stage I had optioned a
script to Ron Jeremy, he said he would have a look at it. I
was naïve at the time and didn’t do a follow-up, but Ron is
a nice guy.
There are five episodes all up on the Porn-o-Rama DVD and
each one follows porn director Paul Norman’s porn production
company through several shoots and locations. It’s an
interesting peep behind the curious curtains of their world
and has all the sophistication of a community television
lifestyle show but if you want glimpses into “live on set
action”, then you pretty much get it all the way through
including starlets being interviewed on the loo and after
messy anal sex scenes.
The credits contain obviously fake names representing the
production team working on Porn-O-Rama. As you will notice
that the director of photography is called Jake Shotz,
lighting was lit by Vice Rays, sound recorded by Stan Mute,
make-up made up by Jane Blush, costumes designed by Vaheed
Taylor and the editing cut by Robyn Leers. Of course this is
totally appropriate naming of these roles as the actors and
actresses of porn carry equally obvious puns as their
monikers. You will also notice that music was composed and
performed by The Bum Notes, which I must let you know is not
the same Bum Notes featuring Adrian Edmondson who did the
soundtrack for the cult British television comedy Bottom.
Ron Jeremy and Alexis Devell spend each episode on set
poking their microphone at the nude actors and actresses to
probe into their personal and professional lives. Such porn
stars and starlets as John Dough, Samantha Strong, Tom Byron
(Who looks like a young Tom Waits), Woody Long, Tracy West,
and Sky Blue.
In each episode they also spend time with crew, producers,
distributors and graphic designers behind the process. The
series is light hearted and if you can’t find stimulating
the tit-bits of insider information as expressed by the
stars and starlets, then you’ll enjoy the bits of tits
bouncing around between each interview.
Ron Jeremy has his own entertaining dialogue such as when he
takes us to a hilly location and points out that
connoisseurs of adult movies may recognise the country side
from many porno movies because I know that when I’m watching
porn I my attention tends to stray to the geographical
foliage.
Or pointing in the distance he tells the viewer about the
orchard of avocado trees sprouting. Forget the woman being
pounded by a thick cock against the parked car, have a look
at these Persea Americana sprouting on the hillside. Aren’t
they marvelous!
He also informs us that enemas must be taken at least an
hour before an anal scene otherwise everything up “there” is
far too loose. I should have watched this before I did the
strap-on dildo scene in Anna Brownfield’s movie “The
Band”.
Unfortunately towards the end of the series they seemed to
have run out of fresh material and a repetitive montage of
video bites is used between interviews but this only occurs
in episode four and five. On the whole there are some
amusing responses from the interviewees, one particular
scene I found quite funny was director Paul Norman making a
comment about one of his stars who blows his load too early
in the shoot and the rest of the scene has to then be
“cheated” so it can simulate the real thing, he says … “If
you worked in an office you wouldn’t finish a couple of
hours before five”.
Porn-O-Rama is available from Umbrella Entertainment.
